Cellphones and cancer an update

As a veteran researcher into the effects of EMF on human health, Dr. One thing you may be wondering is exactly how much radiation is absorbed by the body when your phone is in your pocket. This is difficult to answer because, in truth, cell phones are not adequately tested for safety in different conditions. When held in contact with the body, it was revealed, most phones fail to pass safety standards.

De-Kun Li has been right before. His groundbreaking research on magnetic fields and miscarriage has been backed up by at least seven other studies. Another very scary type of cancer is breast cancer, which predominantly occurs in women. Because of the growing evidence linking cell phones to the formation of cancers, many myself included strongly advise women not to carry their phones in their bras— which is a disturbingly common habit.

For example, in , researchers at Monash University in Australia surveyed nearly women of ages 15 to 40, and found that a quarter of them had carried their smartphone tucked into their bra — with 15 percent doing so in the past week. There is not yet a large body of evidence linking cell phones to breast cancer, specifically.

A small study examined four women under 40 with no family history of breast cancer. All patients regularly carried their smartphones directly against their breasts in their brassieres for up to 10 hours a day, for several years, and developed tumors in areas of their breasts immediately underlying the phones…All patients had no family history of breast cancer, tested negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2, and had no other known breast cancer risks.

Again, this is a small study, so the possible conclusions are limited in scope. However, the lack of family history and genetic disposition to breast cancer, along with the fact that the cancers formed directly underneath the location where the phone was carried, are strong indicators. These days almost everyone has— and needs— a cell phone. So what can you do to reduce your risk of negative health effects from cell phone radiation?

So, for example, you can:. Little changes to your behavior, like these, can make a massive reduction in your exposure to electromagnetic radiation from your phone.

Researchers in Spain are conducting another international case—control study, known as Mobi-Kids , which will include 2, young people aged 10—24 years with newly diagnosed brain tumors and 4, healthy young people. FDA is responsible for testing and evaluating electronic product radiation and providing information for the public about the radiofrequency energy emitted by cell phones.

FCC sets limits on the emissions of radiofrequency energy by cell phones and similar wireless products. The dose of the energy that people absorb from any source of radiation is estimated using a measure called the specific absorption rate SAR , which is expressed in watts per kilogram of body weight The SAR decreases very quickly as the distance to the exposure source increases.

For cell phone users who hold their phones next to their head during voice calls, the highest exposure is to the brain, acoustic nerve, salivary gland, and thyroid. SARs for older phones can be found by checking the phone settings or by contacting the manufacturer. FDA has suggested some steps that concerned cell phone users can take to reduce their exposure to radiofrequency radiation 53 :.

Use of wired or wireless headsets reduces the amount of radiofrequency radiation exposure to the head because the phone is not placed against the head Exposures decline dramatically when cell phones are used hands-free.
